GRAFFITI

REPORT GRAFFITI

1.      Photograph the graffiti area.

2.      Report the graffiti to the Millvale Police as soon as possible by calling the non-emergency dispatch number, 412-821-3410.

3.     Remove graffiti promptly. Rapid removal of graffiti is an effective prevention tool. Data shows that removal within 24 to 48 hours results in a nearly zero rate of recurrence.

4.     Hold other businesses/residents accountable to make sure all graffiti gets covered up. Become involved with fellow residents and business owners to help each other keep Millvale a graffiti free zone.

Graffiti Removal

  • When doing paint-overs, silver spray paint can be substituted for white shellac sealer to prevent problems with graffiti bleeding through.

  • When painting or applying chemicals to a surface, do so from edge to edge.

  • New paint or chemicals may change a surface area. Application from one edge to another minimizes the visual effect of these changes.

  • Use paste type paint remover on vertical surfaces, liquid removers will run.

  • Brushes and steel wool can be used with cleaning agents to increase their effectiveness; however, their use on rough and porous surfaces may drive the graffiti material deeper into the surface area.

  • Use caution and read labels.

  • Before you begin, identify the surface being cleaned and the graffiti materials used. The most commonly used agents in applying graffiti are grease pencils, felt-tipped pens, and spray paints. Others include water based paint, ballpoint pen, lipstick, and crayon. You will find smooth, hard surfaces the easiest to clean; rough, porous surfaces the most difficult.

You Are Ready!!!
Keep in mind, the sooner you remove graffiti, the easier it is to clean off. Be sure to try soap, water, and a soft brush first. If you need to use chemicals, wear protective rubber gloves. Remember to use a paint tarp under your working area. You don't want to solve one problem and create another.
Suggestions for graffiti removal are listed below from the mildest to the harshest treatment in terms of surface impact and toxicity. If the first suggestion does not work, move on to the next. Unless otherwise indicated the procedures listed here can be used for all types of graffiti.
