EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
The Army Core of Engineers did a lot work in the creek. We are not suggesting that we will be flooded in the future.   The weather is unpredictable and weather patterns are changing all over the country. We feel it is better to be prepared then to be sorry. Here are a few things to remember when there is a forecast of severe weather and a threat of a large accumulation of rain in a very short period.
SIREN SYSTEM

Millvale Police monitor the creek on a regular basis to determine if there is a threat of possible flooding. The Allegheny County 911 center also updates Millvale on weather and creek levels on a regular basis.

When the creek reaches a predetermined height the Emergency Management Coordinator, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Borough Officials, Borough Manager and Road Crew are all put on stand by.

When the water reaches a height, where there is a chance of flooding and more rain is fore-casted the SIREN will blow ONCE. This is only a warning to give residents the opportunity to prepare for potential flooding. Consider taking the following precautions:

Move your car to a higher elevation.

Remove items from your basement that are important to you.

Stack sand bags. (Sand is available at the Public Works building at Riverfront Park).

Screw in your back flow devices.

Keep an eye on your children and pets.

The SIREN will be blown TWICE if water goes over the banks of the creek. If this occurs, expect water in the streets.

Once water has breeched the creek it is important to remain in your home, do not drive your vehicle through high water. If you need assistance call 911.

If severe flooding occurs the Millvale Community Center (416 Lincoln Avenue) will open for evacuation.

 GENERAL PREPAREDNESS
Visit www.floodsmart.gov to find out if your home is at risk for a flood.

Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high

 flood risk.

If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building and seal walls in

 basements with waterproofing compounds.

Understand the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning.

Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream on foot. Even water only six inches deep, when moving at

a high rate of speed, can knock you off your feet.

Never drive through flooded areas or standing water. Shallow, swiftly flowing water can wash a car

from a roadway. Also, the roadbed may not be intact under the water.

If the vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Rapidly rising water may engulf

 the vehicle and its occupants.

Be especially cautious at night when it’s harder to recognize flood dangers.

Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening

 conditions.

 AFTER A FLOOD or STORM

After a severe storm if you notice any large trees in the creek notify the Borough immediately.

If you receive water in your basement due to a high water event or a flood, please notify the Borough Office (412.821.2777). The Borough tracks the number of houses that are affected by the storm.

 FLOOD INSURANCE

Property insurance does not typically cover flood damage. Talk to your insurance provider about your policy and consider if you need additional coverage. You may also want to learn about the National Flood Insurance Program.
